So we've had years of hoo-ha about identity cards and the Big Brother world that is just about to be inflicted on us. The Identity and Passport Service released a statement at the end of January which outlined that 50K foreigners would be issued cards by April followed by airport workers in the autumn. Cards will be made available to all "on an entirely voluntary basis" after that.
Now here's the problem: well it seems that someone forgot about a rather important part of the jigsaw - The Identity Card Readers. Now call me old-fashioned, but I thought that someone would have given that part of the project some thought. But it turns out that no police stations, border entry points, or job centers are equipped to actually read the cards. OK so they must be coming along soon, right ? Wrong - There are NO plans, no strategy, nada, nicht, niente. We tax payers have spent £4.7bn on this lemon of a scheme. Read more here
